This course provides a cross-cultural analysis of ethnomedicine, major medical systems, alternative medical systems, curing and healing illness and social control, gender and healing, and the role of traditional and cosmopolitan medical systems in international health.

This course examines medical systems in a cultural context, including traditional healers, herbal medicine, culture bound systems, the meaning of illness, curing and disease.
The Origins of Agriculture (Anthropology 3523)
The origins and spread of agriculture worldwide. Economic, social, and ideological ramifications of the agricultural transition. Processes of plant and animal domestication.
Introduction to Botany (Biology 1110, 4 credit hours)
This course introduces the structure, physiology, and reproduction of seed plants as a basis for an understanding of the broader principles of biology as well as the relation of plants to human life.
Plants and Civilization (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology 3256, 3 credit hours)
This course, based on primary literature, investigates the relationship between the development of global civilizations and the plants utilized by various cultures both historically and today. Topics include food plants, ritual plants, entheogens, the origins of agriculture and the evolution of plant domestication.
